El Hogar, a school called home

In Spanish, hogar means home, the warm heart of a house. In Piendamó, a rural town in Cauca, in the southwest of Colombia, it is also the name of a school: Centro Educativo El Hogar. Its students are the children of farming families, and every morning they arrive at a place that lives up to its name.

A patio painted with games

The heart of the school is its covered patio. Its floor is painted with traditional games, hopscotch, winding tracks and bright shapes, so that even recess is a lesson in color. These are children who still play the games of always, surrounded by green mountains and a community that knows each of them by name.

At El Hogar, recess is played on the floor itself.

"A small rural school, and a joyful one, where playing is part of learning."
